Profile of Mr. Raghbir Singh Sandhu
After
receiving his Master's degree in Economics
from Mumbai University,
Mr. Sandhu started his career as a management
trainee with a leading shipping Company.
In 1978, Mr. Sandhu joined IAS Skyship
Limited, a U.K. based Air Charter Company.
At IAS Skyship, Mr. Sandhu introduced
- for the first time in India - the concept
of 'Sea-cum-Air'. IAS Skyship also holds
the distinction of introducing on board
courier services in India. Mr. Sandhu
was actively involved with the Onboard
Courier business of the Company. In 1983,
Mr. Sandhu joined the Indian operations
of Schenker & Co. GmbH, Germany. During
his stay at Schenker, Mr. Sandhu successfully
promoted 'Skybridge' - Schenker's Multimodal
service via Dubai.
The desire to translate his success into
an enterprise of his own took wings in
1990. Mr. Sandhu left his lucrative job
with Schenker and began Sandhu Jet Cargo
(SJC).
In just a short time, Sandhu Jet Cargo
made its presence felt in the Indian freight
forwarding industry. A year after it commenced
operations, SJC acquired licenses like
IATA, NVOCC.
SJC, by effectively linking Delhi - Mumbai,
introduced Land Bridge services for its
clientele in North India.
In 1993, Sandhu Jet Cargo entered into
a joint venture partnership with its principals
Concord Freight Systems. This was the
time when Indian economy was becoming
liberal and it was the right opportunity
for the foreign partners to enter the
Indian market. Consequently Sandhu Jet
Cargo became Concord Freight System (India)
Private Limited. Concord Freight Systems
has been a part of the worldwide Wilson
Group since 1990. In the year 1997 Concord
Freight changed its corporate identity
to Combined Logistics International and
therefore the Indian Company also changed
its name to Combined Logistics (India)
Private Limited. In the year 1998 Wilson
Group AB - Gothenburg acquired 50% share
of Combined Logistics (India) Private
Limited. And hence the corporate identity
of the Company became Wilson Sandhu Logistics
(India) Limited. In April 1999 Wilson
Group also totally acquired the Combined
Logistics Group and the Castelletti Overseas
S.P.A. Italy.
However, in the year 2002, Wilson Sandhu
Logisitcs purchased 35% shares from Wilson
Group, Gothenburg on a corporate strategy.
The owner of the Wilson Group, Nordic
Capital made a successful industrial sale
to TNT Group of the Netherlands and the
Company was rechristened as TNT Freight
Management AB. However, WSL due to min
equity of 15% in the group, continued
with the Wilson brand for its corporate
image. In the year, Oct 2006, TNT Freight Management was acquired by Geodis Group, France. With this developments. WSL decided to be a totally independent Company to chalk out long-term business plan in view of the changing Global Economic Scenario.
More so, because, Geodis Group already
had presence in India and there were no
business synergies. Therefore, Geodis
& WSL agreed to be non-exclusive strategic
business partners for important traffic
and WSL purchased the remaining 15% Equity
from the Geodis Group. Today, WSL has
independent worldwide network of agents
and strategic alliances. More specifically
active partner of GLN Network.
